Milling Process: Maize/Wheat Flour Milling Process
Close your eyes and think about your favorite food! Nine out of ten products you think of are made from wheat flour. Ever wondered how wheat flour is made in a wheat flour mill or factory? What does it mean to separate fine flour from bran? Let’s look at the process of grinding/grinding wheat flour.
There are five main steps in making wheat flour in a wheat processing plant:
Preparation, cleaning, tempering, flouring and milling of wheat.
Preparation: Inspect farmers' wheat for impurities, possibly mold and other adulterants. Once the grain passes inspection, it is weighed and graded for quality.
Cleaning: Once grading is complete, physical impurities in the grain, such as stones and other things that should not be eaten, are removed (Learn more: Grain Cleaning and Hulling Production).
Tempering: A clean batch of wheat is then "tempered" by exposing it to moisture. Now, while this may sound a little wrong, this step helps soften the bran. Bran is the golden-brown outermost covering of wheat grains. Tempering separates the bran from the rest of the flour. This is where the bran for bran muffins is extracted from the wheat.
Milling: After tempering and milling, different types of wheat grains are mixed to obtain a specific consistency of flour. This step is probably the most important and will determine how good your pancakes are!
Wheat Flour Processing: Wheat processing is the final step in flour making. The wheat grains are passed through the mechanical drum of a drum mill, which breaks the grain into pieces. The cracked wheat is again passed through the milling equipment until coarse meal is obtained. The powder is sieved and passed through the drum again. After several rounds of grinding and sifting, bran, white flour and malt are obtained as separate products.
After wheat flour is made, bran and fine white wheat flour are mixed in the required proportions to make a specific flour, such as whole wheat flour. In accordance with UK law, enriched wheat flour has vitamins, minerals and other nutritional supplements added to it. Sometimes, the entire batch of wheat can be ground into whole wheat flour.
Types of flour
If you are planning to build a wheat flour mill, you may also be interested in knowing about the following flour types.
Whole wheat flour is just as the name suggests, wheat grains ground into a uniform consistency with nothing added and nothing subtracted.
Brown wheat flour, on the other hand, has reduced bran and malt content. Brown wheat flour retains approximately 85% of the original grain content.
White flour, on the other hand, has most of the bran and wheat germ removed. It is only 75% similar to whole wheat flour.
Wheat germ is a term used when brown or white flour has wheat germ obtained from the milling process added to it.
Whole wheat flour or brown flour with added malted grains is labeled malted flour.
When wheat is ground between two stones in an old-fashioned stone flour mill, the flour we get is specifically labeled "stone-ground" flour. Stone grinding is used to preserve all the natural vitamins and minerals in the wheat.
